Festive Show Is Wizzard! |
| |
ROY WOOD ROCK & ROLL BAND
Town Hall, Birmingham
Birmingham Mail;
Birmingham (UK)
December 24, 2007
by Andy Coleman
Festive cheer arrived early from a familiar source as Roy Wood played a rare
hometown gig.
The show covered the the psychedelic Move years, the Glam Rock Wizzard era
and some new songs from a forthcoming Rock & Roll album.
An initial muddy sound marred the opening of California Man and Ball Park
Incident, with the vocals of female singer Shell Naylor particularly lost in the
mix.
And the sold out crowd was slow to respond, prompting Roy to remark "How
polite - we're used to gigs where people are jumping about on pogo sticks. "Well, that was never going to happen at the posh new Town Hall but respect
to Roy for persevering until everyone was on their feet and singing by the
time set closer I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday came along an hour
later.
VERDICT: *****

Town Hall Gig Success |
| |
A full house saw The Roy Wood Rock & Roll Band really rock the Town Hall on
Saturday. They played an absolute belter, with Roy in very fine voice -
probably the best we've ever heard him. Danny had the pleasure of playing a
grand piano and blimey, did it sound great. It was bloody big as well, especially
if you were trying to take photographs around it! Roy performed so very well and entertained his audience like a true star. The Town Hall has recently been
renovated & looks magnificent - the perfect venue for a magnificent musician and his band.

Flippin Eck, Another One! |

It would be easier for Roy just to take over the entire BBC Radio
Network, then you'd know to listen all the time! However, just to make
us Web Wizzards work even harder, Roy appeared on BBC Radio 6 this
evening (Mon 17th Dec) when Steve Lamacq invited him to choose songs on
the 'Good Day, Bad Day' feature.
Once again, you can hear it on BBC Radio's Listen Again facility...
which is becoming increasingly handy!

the Top 40 at No. 27 with I Wish It Could Be Christmas

The UK chart system has recently changed & now includes Download Sales.
Therefore, although no actual CD has been re-released, the song has
been extremely popular as an Internet Download. Anyway, less of the
technical bits. We don't care, do we boys & girls?!!! Celebrate!

KAISER CHIEFS MEET ROY WOOD |
| |

Photo by Roy Smiljanic for the Birmingham Mail
from the Birmingham Mail
27 November 2007
by Andy Coleman
Indie band the Kaiser Chiefs met one of their musical heroes before their sold-out show at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena. The band has recorded Roy Wood's Flowers In The Rain for a Radio 1 tribute album and asked the Birmingham Mail to set up a meeting with the former Wizzard frontman. So Roy, along with Danny McCormack and John 'Boysey' Battrum from his new Rock & Roll Band, went along to last night's show to give their verdict on the Kaisers' version of the Move hit, the first song played on Radio 1, 40 years ago. "I told them I expected it to be totally different to the one I recorded with The Move but it's really not that far removed," said Roy. "I liked the bit they've put in the middle, which is similar to something off the Beatles' Sgt Pepper album."
Roy said he was a fan of the Kaiser Chiefs, his favourite song being Ruby.
"They asked me about my new band and when we would be playing, so I told them next Thursday at the Jam House, then December 21 at Bilston's Robin 2 and December 22 at Birmingham Town Hall."
The Kaisers' vocalist Ricky Wilson, drummer Nick Hodgson, guitarist Andrew White, keyboardist Nick Barnes and bassist Simon Rix were delighted to chat with Roy. Ricky, 29, said: "On Radio 2 the other day, somebody called in to say forget about the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, play a Move song. Lots of callers agreed with him. I didn't realise how important The Move were."

Gets His Boulders On the Radio!

September

Roy has been ultra busy promoting Boulders & has done so
many interviews we couldn't keep up with him! As Roy said "I've
done loads of interviews, many of which I didn't even know who
they were for until I got to the studios! There was one time
when I did 23 interviews in one afternoon. Blimey! Boulders
should be No. 1 with all that work I put in!"
Roy
gave many press interviews, some of which we will be publishing
here ASAP. If anyone out there has managed to collect Roy's
interviews for Boulders, please could you scan them & send 'em
to us for inclusion. woody.info@roywood.co.uk.
Roy has done 3 shows for Radio 2: Steve Wright, Ken Bruce's
Pop Quiz where he got stuck in the London traffic & had to do
it by mobile phone! Nontheless, he beat Joe Pascquali hands
down! Tonight, Roy is appearing on Radio 2's coolest & most
respected show, Radcliffe & Maconie...

Roy
Wood's classic debut solo album is magnificently remastered &
issued here forthe
first time on CD... & it's only taken over 30 years!
Critically acclaimed as a masterpiece, this album reveals Roy
at his creative zenith, playing every instrument (bar one!), writing
every note & every word, arranging, producing & making the tea!
He even painted the sleeve &, on this digital update, wrote the
sleeve notes too. A rare thing indeed!
The sound on the CD is absolutely sparkling with clarity whilst
retaining the warmth of the original recording & is much closer
to the way Roy intended it to be heard. However, in those days,
technology was limited & what was actually heard in the studio
was never quite matched on vinyl thus, the public were bereft
of the artists' intentions. You can now hear Boulders as it was
meant to be, PLUS the added bonus of a previously unreleased
version of a track in working progress.
The full colour booklet features scene-setting sleeve notes by
two of Woody's long time aficionados, along with a chapter from
the man himself revealing for the first time ever, true tales
from the making of Boulders! Roy picks out his surprise favourite
track & gives us an insight into why he entitled his album so!
This collection of songs is the most eclectic, endearing & of
course, eccentric as the man himself, exploring many different
areas of popular music. From the simplistic yet ingenious 'Wake
Up' to the classic rocking 'Locomotive', we are afforded a fascinating
journey through the influences & inspirations of the amazing Mr.
Roy Wood!
