Roy’s next project was the release of his album, "Main Street". Although the songs were recorded in 1976, it was never released at the time. The original tapes were discovered and after a little digital ‘tweaking’, the CD was released on Edsel Records in 2000, with sleeve artwork by Roy himself! The jazz-influenced style has not dated and the music sounds as fresh and innovative as one has come to expect from a man of such legendary creative stature.

Woody and The WomblesThis was also the year in which Woody joined forces with The Wombles! Mike Batt (the man behind The Wombles’ fine collection of tunes) and Roy worked together on their respective Christmas hits ‘A Wombling Merry Christmas’ and ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ to come up with a combination which gave them a Top 20 hit!

An extensive and highly successful tour of the UK with Roy Wood's Army culminated in a headlining performance at Birmingham's Millennium Celebrations, which was seen by 20,000 in Centenary Square and was relayed worldwide by the BBC.

Woody and Ivor

Woody and Ivor!

June 2001: In recognition of his exceptional contribution to popular music, Roy was awarded an "Ivor" for his Outstanding Song Collection at the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards.  In accepting his award, presented by Chris Tarrant, Roy had this to say...

"It's pretty unusual for me to receive an award, especially a posh one like this. I'd like to thank the Ivors for that, thank you very much indeed. It's encouraged me to go home and write some more songs. Thank you very much."

Roy attended the award ceremony in London at The Grosvenor House Hotel with his daughter Holly, along with such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Pete Townshend, John Barry and Iron Maiden!

March 2002 saw Roy's return to the U.S. With Army in tow, four nights at the Village Underground marked his first official New York appearance in 28 years! The shows were greeted by great critical acclaim and plans to return are afoot.

Inspired by Roy's Ivor Novello Award and continued respect from the music business, EMI, Sanctuary and Warner Bros. (the three major labels that own his catalogue from The Move's 'Message From The Country' onwards) collaborated in recovering and restoring the songwriters' surviving master tapes. As a result of this cross-company collaboration, 'Roy Wood - Outstanding Performer' appeared in November 2003 on Sanctuary Records, including tracks from the Jet, Warner Bros., Cheapskate, Speed and Legacy record labels. It is also the first time this material has been remastered from the original master tapes.

Carl WayneIn August of 2004, Roy suffered the loss of his great friend, Carl Wayne, former lead singer with The Move and latterly with The Hollies, Carl and Roy have been very close friends since childhood and shared many of their greatest musical projects together. At his next gig, Roy made a heartfelt announcement, dedicating Blackberry Way to Carl. www.carlwayne.co.uk

Late in 2005, Roy formed a ten piece unit entitled "The Roy Wood Rock and Roll Band" including (to be announced in true Bonzo Dog stylee) "In the rhythm section, setting a swing on drums... Roy Adams and on bass... Neil Simpson, the one and only Shell Naylortwin on backing vocals, on piano "Ivory Dan" himself, Mr. Danny McCormack... and in the horn section, we have on alto saxophone,  John "Boysey" Battrum and on tenors Messrs. James Russell and Paul Corry whilst bigging it up on baritone, Paul's bro',  Jim Corry... that's nine people then... oh, and over there we have, on the phone, the one and only... Mr. Roy Wood!"

The Roy Wood Rock and Roll Band made their live debut at The Frontier, Batley, 14 Dec 2005 and appeared on TV for the first time on The Jonathan Ross Show 22nd December.

2005 saw the release of an expanded and remastered edition of The Move's 'Message From The Country' entitled 'Harvest Showdown' - a Harvest Records rarities and ‘best of’ set featuring The Move, ELO and Roy's work as a solo artist and with Wizzard. Also issued in memory of Carl Wayne, was an anthology of collaborations between Roy and Carl, for which Roy remastered and acted as executive producer.

BouldersAugust 2007 saw the release of  classic debut solo album 'Boulders'. It was magnificently remastered at EMI and issued in the UK for the first time on CD... and it's only taken over 30 years!

Critically acclaimed as a masterpiece, this album reveals Roy at his creative zenith, playing every instrument (bar one!), writing every note and every word, arranging, producing and making the tea! He even painted the sleeve and, on this digital update, wrote the sleeve notes too. A rare thing indeed!

EMI also saw fit to release probably the best compilation of Roy’s music in the form of a CD entitled "Roy Wood - The Wizzard! Greatest Hits and More - The EMI Years" with 20 remastered tracks. The CD contains two previously unreleased songs "Aerial Pictures" and "Airborne", a withdrawn edit of "Forever" and some rare B-sides.

Roy Wood - The Wizzard

In December 2007, Roy did it again with the greatest Christmas song ever when Wizzard hit  the Top 40 reaching No. 16 with I Wish It Could Be Christmas  Everyday.  The UK chart system changed in 2006 and now includes Download Sales.  Therefore, although no actual CD was re-released, the song became extremely popular as an Internet Download.

Dr. Roy WoodOn 18 January 2008, Roy was presented with one of the highest accolades possible when he received an honorary degree and was made Doctor of Music by the University of Derby. It is a fine award and has been earned by Roy’s hard work and his contribution to music over 40 – odd years. These honorary awards are conferred in recognition of achievement by individuals of significant distinction… and Roy certainly falls into that category!

Not long after this, BBC Radio 2 broadcast  a new programme, ‘The Record Producers’ in which Richard Allinson and Steve Levine took an in depth look at Roy’s music using original multi track tapes to illustrate the true genius of the man. The programme was probably the most interesting and intelligent exploration of Roy’s recording and producing talents, ever compiled and included comments from EMI’s Head Of Catalogue, Nigel Reeve.

Late in 2009, a campaign by Birmingham newspaper, The Sunday Mercury, was begun. The idea is to have Roy immortalised by a star dedicated to him in Birmingham's Walk Of Stars on Broad St. More on this soon!

Roy is currently on tour with his Rock and Roll Band as Special Guests of Status Quo, playing arena gigs around the UK.
The last couple of years have seen Woody’s profile rise once again, as the UK’s leading institutions recognize this ‘National Treasure’ but it is a quote from an American with which we leave you… for now…
"…the mastermind behind some of the most beguiling tunes of our time…"
(Scott Schinder, Time Out New York).
